The "haute couture" of label design receives the “Golden Label Award” in
Label printers, packaging designers and marketing specialists have over the past months been entering their best work for the international label competition, the Golden Label Award. In a preliminary round held in Leoben on 8 & 9 March, an international specialist jury made up of printing experts and marketing specialists and packaging designers selected from the numerous entries (more than 700) those paper labels that achieved the highest scores on all the assessment criteria.
The 4 criteria making up the assessment were advertising effectiveness, creative implementation and emotional feel, standard of printing and finishing, and innovative or special use of material, metallic inks, halftone screening, etc.
The award winners include labels entered by top international companies such as Budweiser USA, Heineken, Warsteiner, leading European label printers and packaging designers.
The coveted Golden Label Award is graded into Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit. There are also three special prizes on offer, one for special printing technology, and two special design awards,
the "Golden Mermaid".
The Golden Mermaid award is a prize for paper label design, and was awarded by the Pan European Brand Design Association (PDA). As the main sponsor of this association of European packaging designers, Brigl & Bergmeister regards cooperation with designers as one way of maximizing the potential of labels as a material to add value.
The award ceremony was held in the Palais Ferstel in Vienna on 14 April 2005. As befits the event, the evening was held in a festive setting, accompanied by a special programme of music. The musical star Sandra Pires (Sound of Music) with her accompaniment made the evening an unforgettable experience for the international guests.
One notable feature was the outstanding performance of Austrian labels. For example Vöslauer Balance, submitted by the agency Demner, Merlicek & Bergmann, won an award, as did the label printer Marzek with a label for a wine called "Olympia" to commemorate the Olympic summer games in Athens. This award-winning work was created by Sabine König, the partner of Roman Hagara, double Olympic medallist and guest of honour at the event.
